96年にBeans、Priest、M.Sayyidの3MCとプロデューサーE.BlazeによってNYにて結成、01年にはUKの老舗テクノ・レーベルWARPと契約し、世界を仰天させたアヴァンギャルド・ヒップホップ・ユニットANTI POP CONSORTIUM（02年に惜しくも解散）。そのメンバーのHigh PriestとM. Sayyidにより04年に結成されたのがこのユニット。今年初頭には早速1stアルバム『GOOD FORTUNE』をNinja Tuneよりリリースしたばかり。

常に斬新に彼らこそが今もなお"ヒップホップ"の精神を体現する
それまでも噂は聞いていたものの、WARPからのアルバム『ARRHYTHMIA』でなんとなくANTI POP CONSORTIUMをしっかりと聴いてみたら、同時期に聴いていたANTICON周辺と相まって、ヒップホップの可能性を再認識。というあまりにもありきたりな出会いだったんだけれど、続けざまにNYジャズ界のベスト・ピアニストの一人MATHEW SHIPPと共作を発表したのには驚いた。で、その後突如解散。中心人物の一人BeansはソロになってからもWARPからリリースを続け、確固たる地位を築いているのはご存知だろうが、ここに来て、やっと残りの2MC、High PriestとM. Sayyidも動き出して、なんとNinja Tuneからリリースってんだから、これまた面白いことになるかもよ！ そんな期待をしているときに彼らが来日するという。
6/24（金）に大阪・鰻谷のsunsui、翌6/25（土）に東京・新宿LOFTで行われたイベント"Handshake"で見せたライブショウは、ヒップホップがどうとか、アヴァンギャルドがどうとかという視点ももちろんあるだろうけど、それよりも何よりも"いい音楽"と"いいヴァイブス"がそこにはあった。 ホテルに迎えに行ったときに部屋でサウンドチェックを入念に行っていたそうで、その意識の高さは見習わないと、とRFDのナオトさんが言っていたのも印象的だった。ちなみにこのナオトさんは大阪での彼らのライブに感動し、そのまま東京まで同行したのも楽しかった。 本当なら来日前に掲載するはずだったメールインタビューを、諸事情により来日後に掲載することになったのは残念だけど、その分、今回の大阪のライブの模様を録音したので、その一部を聴いてもらえるようにした。
以下がメールインタビュー。回答者はHigh Priest。本文後に掲載しているのは翻訳前のもの。
-ANTI
POP CONSORTIUMの活動休止の理由を可能な範囲で結構ですので教えてください。
我々は物事が進んでいく方向性に満足していなかったし、APC内で音楽活動に支障をきたすような対立もあったんだ。
-02年のANTI POP CONSORTIUMの活動休止後、05年の現在まで音楽活動はしていましたか？ライブ活動やリリース、他のグループへの参加などはしていましたか？
元々2人ともソロの作品に取り組んでいた。そしてAPCとしての活動をストップした頃からの続きを具現化したものが現在のAIRBORN AUDIOなんだ。
-AIRBORN AUDIOという名前の由来を教えてください。
名前を思いついたのはSayyidだよ。
-ANTI POP CONSORTIUMでも一緒だった二人が結成したのがAIRBORN AUDIOですが、結成に至った経緯を教えてください。
APCの頃もたくさんの制作作業を一緒に行っていたし、我々は常に一緒に何かをしようという気持ちがあったんだ。始めAirborn Audioは、Wutangの中でGhostfaceとRaekwonが一緒に制作作業をしていたのと同じような形のプロジェクトになる予定だったんだ。
-AIRBORN AUDIOの活動に関して、コンセプトやテーマといったものがあるのであれば教えてください。
メインコンセプトはホットなトラックさ。
-1stアルバム『GOOD FORTUNE』について質問です。主にトラックは誰が作りましたか？
トラック作りの役割分担は半々だったよ。
-制作する際に、印象的だったことがあれば教えてください。
印象に残っていることは、自分たち自身のプロジェクトの音楽をレコーディングしてミックスしたプロセスそのものだな。
-今作を作る上で、もしくは普段から音楽を作る上で、インスパイアされるものは何ですか？
普段の生活が我々にインスピレーションを与えてくれるよ。後はリー・ペリー、 DJスクリュー、パブリック・エネミーなんかにもインスパイアされるね。
-ラップ（リリック）ではどのような意味のことを言っていますか？どのようなことを伝えていますか？パーティーチューンだったり、シリアスな曲だったりと、いろいろな種類があると思いますが、そのそれぞれについて詳しくお教えください。
やめておくよ。曲のことは曲自身がうまく語っていると思うからね。
-ANTI POP CONSORTIUM時代にWARPからリリースしたことも意表を突かれましたが、AIRBORN AUDIOはNINJA TUNEから、というのも驚きました。ともにUKを代表する巨大レーベルですが、NYに在住しながらもあえてUKのレーベルからリリースしているのでしょうか？その理由を教えてください。また、NUNJA TUNEからリリースとなった経緯を教えてください。
ただの偶然だよ。
-ANTI POP CONSORTIUMではなくAIRBORN AUDIOだからこそできる、ということを教えてください。
APCとは違ったレベルでのトラックといろんなボーカルパターンの融合かな。
-ANTI POP CONSORTIUMもAIRBORN AUDIOも音楽にしろ活動にしろ、"オリジナル"だと思います。"オリジナル"ということに対して自負はありますか？
我々は我々自身でいるだけだよ。
-ANTI POP CONSORTIUMとして活動を始めた頃と比べると、ヒップホップは、圧倒的なまでに巨大マーケットになりました。DJシャドウは「今やヒップホップはない。あるのはラップだけだ」とまで言っています。このことについて意見を聞かせてください。
その発言には賛成できないな。
-これまでに影響を受けたアーティストや作品を音楽に限らず、小説、映画、アート、などから挙げてください。
カリール・ジブランの全ての作品、リチャード・ライトの「Outsider」という本、音楽でいうとパブリック・エネミー、ジミ・ヘンドリックス、スライ＆ザ・ファミリー・ストーン、ファンカデリック、後、芸術家ではバスキア、サイ・トゥオンブリ、シュナベール、ロメール・ベルデンといったところかな。とにかくチェックしているもの何でもだよ。
-来日に対して、日本のオーディエンスに一言、コメントをください。

-What made you decide to stop the activities as ANTI POP CONSORTIUM? Would you please tell us the reason to the extent possible?
we (m.sayyid and myself high Priest) were not happy with the direction things were heading and the were several internal confliccts whic also affected the work.
-Have you been involved in any kind of musical activities since you stopped the activities as ANTI POP CONSORTIUM in 2002? If yes, would you please tell us the activities you took part in for the meanwhile, such as live shows, albums or singles you took part in, or being a part of any other group?
we have all worked solo material and Airborn Audio is our current incarnation continuing where APC left off.
-Would you please tell us how you come up with the name "Airborn Audio"?
Sayyid came up with the name.
-Both of you are the members of ANTI POP CONSORTIUM. Would you please tell us how the unit "Airborn Audio" was formed?
we
had always had intentions of working together being that we shared the bulk of
the production duty during APC initially Airborn was intended to be a project
mush in the same way ghostface and raekwon worked together within Wutang.
Is the activity of "Airborn Audio" built on any concept or theme? If it were, would you please tell us?
the main concept or theme is hot tracks.
-Next, we would like to ask you some questions as regards to your debut album "GOOD FORTUNE". Would you please tell us who made the major part of trucks on this album?
we shared the production duties 50/50.
-Would you please tell us if there were any impressive event you can remember in the process of making this album?
just the process of being forced to record and mix our own project.
-Was there any specific event or a thing that inspired you when you made this album? What inspire you the most when you making music?
life inspired us lee perry,dj screw public enemy etc.
-What do you try to convey by the lyrics of this album?The album consists of a variety of tunes such as party tunes, serious ones and so on. Would you be able to explain to us in detail one by one?
not really the song speak better for themselves
-It was a kind of surprise when you released an album from "WARP" as ANTI POP CONSORTIUM, and we were also surprised that you released this album from "NUNJA TUNE" as both were two of the most major record companies in UK. Is there any specific reason why you release albums from record labels in UK while you live in NY?Would you please tell us what made you decide to release this album from "NUNJA TUNE"?
Just coincidence.
-What do you think you can achieve as Airborn Audio that cannot be done as ANTI POP CONSORTIUM?
A different level of merging vocal dexterity (patterns)with tracks.
-We think the music and the activities of ANTI POP CONSORTIUM and AIRBORN AUDIO are seriously ORIGINAL. Do you feel you are making something original or being original?
we
are being ourselves.
-Compared to the times when you started the career as ANTI POP CONSORTIUM, HIP HOP music forms a huge market all over the world nowadays, and it is almost overwhelming. DJ SHADOW says "There is not HIP HOP anymore. Only rap." Would you please give commentary to this situation?

-Would you please tell us the artists or pieces of work that had effect on you in your lives? Not only music, but also novels, movies, arts or design and so on.
